As it’s nearing Christmas I wanted to share with you on of my favourite photos of Whitby. The image below was taken by the famous Frank Meadow Sutcliffe and it is described in his collection of works as;
Christmas window display of game, poultry, and fruit at 87 Church Street, Whitby. Mr Brooksbank would have been the owner around 1910, the probable date of the photograph.
Nothing much can be found online about Mr Brooksbank, though the building itself is now the famous White Horse and Griffin and was built in 1681 by Sir Hugh Cholmley. A lovely image was captured here of the history of that famous building, and it stands as a record of a Whitby Christmas.
Merry Christmas, from Whitby Uncovered.
